Transition at Walsden

Transitions often come with feelings of excitement and anticipation but at times can bring anxiety, uncertainty, and stress. We understand that these transitions need to be managed well, with structures in place, to support a child’s continued development, wellbeing, and academic success.

Key Transition Points

Moving into Reception
When you child moves from home or nursery into primary school you will see play-based learning alongside a more structured educational environment. Your child  may need support with developing new social skills, adjusting to new routines, and managing their emotions in the face of increased expectations.

From Primary School to Secondary School:
The transition from primary to secondary school can feel exciting and daunting. It may even feel overwhelming for some children. Secondary schools tend to be larger, with a wider range of subjects, and many teachers.  It also comes with the need to navigate new social dynamics. Emotional and practical support is crucial to help children develop resilience, organisational skills, and confidence in adapting to this environment.

We work closely with Todmorden High School and have developed a comprehensive transition programme. The children start to visit the high school in Year 4 with experience days and sports activities. These are built upon n Year 5 and Year 6. Some of children benefit from an extended transition offer which Todmorden High School are happy to accommodate.

Moving School Mid-Year (e.g. Mainstream to Special School Provision, Off Site Direction or as an In Year Transfer):
Some children may need to transition from one school to another during the course of the academic year. These transition can be particularly difficult for children as they may be the only learner moving at this point.  A move will invariably involve a change.  This may be a new curriculum, different teaching methods, social environment and much more. The emotional impact of these transitions can also be significant, requiring support for both the young person and their family.
